Mark Benton will play Edna Turnblad in a touring production of the musical Hairspray, which will open at the Lowry Theatre in Salford next week. Mark Benton, pictured here in The Comedians at the Lyric Theatre, will join the UK tour of Hairspray, after his present commitments are complete.
The production will tour the UK from February 13, 2013, and is being produced by Stage Entertainments. Benton, who is best known for his television work on shows such as Early Doors and Waterloo Road, said: “I can’t wait to start working on Hairspray, it’s going to be amazing fun and an interesting challenge for me as it’s my first foray into the world of musicals.
As a musical I think it has everything, great songs, great script, really interesting story and lots and lots of laughs.” Hairspray opened in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2007, and has won the best musical prize at the 2008 Olivier Awards. The show then embarked on its first UK tour in 2010.After appearing at the Lowry, it will continue to tour until September, when will it play the Norwich Theatre Royal. Hairspray has a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, and music by Marc Shaiman, who wrote the show’s lyrics with Scott Wittman.
