Fans of the Walking Dead received a special treat as the show's pilot was re-shown in black and white, according to reports. The unusual alternate version of the first show is to pay homage to the Robert Kirkman comic book series that it is based on, which is rendered in black and white.

The new version of the pilot, which first appeared in 2010, premiered in the United States ahead of the show's third season. Producer Frank Darabont has a history of re-tuning his work into sepia - he included a black and white version of his horror film The Mist in the movie's Blu-Ray edition.

The Walking Dead stars Andrew Lincoln as a US deputy sheriff trying to survive in a world populated by zombies.
